چارلز دیکنز یکی از برجسته‌ترین نویسندگان انگلیسی در قرن نوزدهم میلادی است. او 7 فوریه 1812 در «پورتسموث» متولد شد. منتقدان او را تأثیرگذارترین نویسنده‌ی انگلیسی پس از شکسپیر و بزرگ‌ترین نویسنده‌ی عصر ویکتوریا در انگلستان می‌دانند.دیکنز در نهم ژوئن 1870 در سن 58 سالگی بر اثر سکته‌ی قلبی درگذشت.
