Tadeusz Rozewicz is one of the great writers of our time, internationally celebrated as a poet, dramatist, and prose-writer. He gained his reputation as the most important poet to emerge after the war with his first volume, Anxiety, which heralded a new harsh and stark poetic, an "anti-poetry" born of war-time experiences. With a succession of very controversial plays, Rozewicz has established himself as one of the most important and popular living Polish dramatists. His plays have been widely performed on stage, radio and television. In fact, Rozewicz is more concerned with Kafka's inmost fears than with the reality of his life. The Trap dramatizes anxieties and nightmares of the artist Franz, as he himself experiences them in relation to his father, his friend, and his fiancee. And despite his attempts to escape the many threats of confinement - existential, societal, and historical - assailing from all sides, the traps are too cunning for Franz (From the introduction by Daniel Gerould) In fact, Rozewicz is more concerned with Kafka's inmost fears than with the reality of his life.
